An intervertebral disc is a cushion-like structure located between each pair of vertebrae in the spine. Composed of an outer layer called the annulus fibrosus and a gel-like center known as the nucleus pulposus, the disc absorbs shocks and provides flexibility to the spinal column.

When segmented in medical imaging, such as MRI or CT scans, the intervertebral disc is isolated from surrounding structures for detailed analysis. This segmentation is crucial for examining disc health, assessing degeneration or herniation, planning surgeries, and conducting biomechanical studies.
