3D model description
This interactive cat toy is designed to look like a watermelon. It features seeds that your cat will need to pivot to reveal compartments that you can add treats to. You can configure it in four different difficulties as there are two styles of seeds and two red flesh designs.
Seed Easy: Solid without a hole
Seed Difficult: Seed with a hole
Red Easy: No stopper, seeds can swivel in both directions
Red Difficult: Stopper peg which only allows seeds to pivot back and forth
Configurations from easiest to most difficult:
1.) Seed and Red Easy: Solid seeds will cover the treat compartments and your cat will push the seed either way to reveal the treat.
2.) Seed Easy + Red Difficult: Solid seeds will cover the treat compartments and your cat will push the seed ONE way to reveal the treat.
3.) Seed Difficult + Red Easy: Seeds with holes will originally not cover the treat compartments. Drop a treat through the seed hole. Your cat will need to pivot the seed to cover the treat compartment which will drop the treat into the treat compartment and then pivot to reveal the treat compartment. This can be achieved with just one motion if they push it continuously.
4.) Seed and Red Difficult: Seeds with holes will originally not cover the treat compartments. Drop a treat through the seed hole. Your cat will need to pivot the seed to cover the treat compartment which will drop the treat into the treat compartment and then pivot in the REVERSE direction to reveal the treat. This can only be achieved with two motions because there are stopper pegs once the treat compartment is closed.
To prevent sliding on the floor, I bought some little rubber cabinet stickers to use on the bottom (4 of them) like these which helps: https://amzn.to/3RYv96U
3D printing settings
All of the pieces should be oriented in the direction they should print.
I used 3 perimeters/walls and 15% infill on all pieces
Green Shell: Print 1. s are needed under the 5 seed holes. I used tree/organic s which were very easy to remove. I used .28 layer height.
Red Easy or Difficult: Pick either (or both if youβd like different configurations.) s are optional if your bridge settings are okay. If you donβt use s and you have some stray filament in the cups, be sure to cut/pull those out because your catβs claws will be scraping against that area to retrieve the treats. I printed both ways and I like how no s better. I used .20 layer height. Tip: I use a PEI sheet and print almost everything on the smooth side, but I flipped it to the rough side for a more realistic texture on this piece.
Seed Easy or Difficult: Pick either (or both if youβd like different configurations.) Print 5. These absolutely need to be printed standing up. The pegs need to flex to fit in the holes and printing them laying down will cause them to snap when flexed. No s are needed in the hole (on difficult version) so you can select to only do s on the build plate. I used standard (rather than tree/organic). I used .12 layer height so itβs nice and smooth.
If doing Red Difficult: Print 5 red pegs. I tested different sizes and the size I went with is tight enough that I had to use the floor to push it all the way in. I still put a dot of glue on the back side in case any claws are scraping a bit hard. Safety first. I'll include a looser and tighter version as well. I used .28 layer height.
Assembly: IF you are doing the difficult Red configuration, push the red pegs into the smallest holes which are to the right of the compartments. Flip over and put a dot of super glue to ensure your cats wonβt be able to pop them out.
Assembly:
Set the Red piece into the Green piece.
Push the five seeds through the bigger holes which will through the red and the green pieces and hold them together. Should you need to remove them, youβll need needle nose pliers to pinch the very tips of them from the back side of the toy and push out.
