When I initially started with SLA printing, the printers available had relatively low build volumes. Now that a fresh batch of large-volume SLA units is available, the situation has changed. I was lucky enough to receive an Anycubic Photon M3 Max for review and testing, and it is, in a word, enormous.
Anycubic's Photon M3 Max is the biggest model in the new Photon line. The Photon M3 Max has a build volume of 298mm x 165mm x 300mm and a total volume of 14 liters. The New Photon M3 Max includes a 7K display with a resolution of 6480 x 3600 pixels.
I decided to put this new printer to the test by printing a free Egyptian chess set from Cults3D. Designed by ALEXLOPRECIADO the level of detail in this free model collection is astounding.
I was able to print half of the set of 16 full-size pieces on a single build plate using the new Photon M3 Max, and because of the 7K screen, all of the models' details are sharp and visible. The print came out great. I used Esun Beige Standard resin for these pieces. There were no failures despite the number of models and . The 12-hour print time was worth the wait. There were no defects in any of the items produced.
The 7K screen brilliantly showed the finer elements of the models. With a large-capacity SLA printer, you can make an army of miniatures in half the time and play much faster than you could with smaller units.
I was thrilled with the final print's results. I wanted a more difficult task and to test how much detail I could extract from the new Photon M3 Max's 7K screen and build volume. After a long search on cult3d, I discovered Wicked3d's Mephisto model, which is one of the most elaborate 3D printed models I've ever seen.
There are 43 pieces in all, with some that, owing to their size, none of my existing SLA printers could handle.
When compared to my other printers, the Photon M3 Max worked wonderfully, and I was even able to load the build platform, cutting the amount of printing needed. The total height of the models, not the amount of material on the bed, determines the print duration of SLA printers. The huge volume SLA printer can generate twice as much as my previous SLA printers, if not more.
Also, the Photon M3 Max's 6480x3600 7K Display should show the finer print details better than my 4K printers.
This print still took a few days, but the Photon M3 Max's auto-refill capability made the larger print a snap and alleviated my concerns about whether there would be enough resin to finish it.
One problem with high volume SLA is that it takes a lot of resin to fill the vat. With the Anycubic Photon M3 Max it takes about 500ml of resin to reach the maximum line, and another 500ml of resin may be readily added before the auto fill recognizes the vat as full. This, however, isn't really a problem technically, just something to note.
Not only was I blown away by the finished model's scale, but also by the degree of detail I was able to extract from the printer after finishing and assembling the components and completing the sculpture. The model's complexities were increased using Anycubic craftsman's grey resin and esun Grey pro resin, and it shows in the end result. Even the smallest elements were meticulously crafted, such as the skulls, front ornamentation, and Mephesto's visage. You can see the creases around his lips and eyes, as well as the texture of his skin, which surprised me.
It has never been easier to enter the SLA world with the launch of new large volume SLA printers, with solutions available for needs of all sizes and demands. You can print significantly more on a single bed in the same amount of time using a high-capacity printer. If you are a hobbyist or even using SLA for your business, a large volume SLA printer can greatly increase productivity. And with a site like Cults3d with free and paid models, you can find everything you may need in one easy to navigate place.
I'm anxious to see what I can achieve with the Anycubic Photon M3 Max in the future, since it's quickly become one of my favourite SLA printers.
