Makeβs description
This is one of my prints of Mabats fantastic ATH Gen-2 horns. I do use the included file for the unsectioned horn and slice it my self as I prefer using dowels for easier alignment during the glue up.
I am in the "I hate filling and sanding camp" but somehow it is both fast and easy to sand the completed horn.
Sharing an experience finishing the horn:
The green horn in the picture is something of a botch job though even if it looks good from most angles. You can see the ts when you study the picture. As the printed pieces where really nice with hardly any warping the glue up went perfect. I then winged it and applied a black artist type acryllic paint with a semi coarse sponge. Was using a generous amount on the tiny seams/glue ts to use it as a filler.
This was no success, must have been using a too cheap paint as it collapsed into the tiny cracks. Even 3 layers did not rectify this. So I had to sand the built up layers down using 120 grid. Now the acryllic paint worked as a filler and everything looked and felt smooth.
But no. As I applied the top coat, an acryllic 01 matte for indoor walls, the seams became visible.
Lesson learned? You need to spend more than my 10 minutes of preparation. Its still fast and a very satisfying job. Use some polyester or epoxy spackle that is known to be easy to sand. This is a 5 min job. Then sand with 120, 240 and 400 grit. This does not take long. Finish the preparation with a filler on a spraycan. It will fill up any tiny imperfections (what I did not do on the green horn) and also highlight what you may have forgot to sand. Its fun. For finish I do like the matte look and that is an easy and very forgiving finish.
