Your design is awesome; however, I’ve printed 3 raccoons now and the tails won’t stay together once cooled and removed from the plate. I am using the Anycubic Max 3 Combo FDM. It’s as though the ing sections that interlock the tail pieces either aren’t quite wide enough or round enough, I think if you could increase one or both of those it would work perfectly or maybe reduce the inner divet so there’s a little less play in it.

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that. I did some tests with improved articulations, but they still failed to the beta testers that had issues before. After all this time I still don't know why it randomly doesn't work for some people. It's a very small percentage, like 0.5% of s, and I'm unable to find a common cause. I'm starting to think it has something to do with the cooling properties of the filament, having a combination of shrinking and curling that makes the pins print shorter. Otherwise they shouldn't be able to fit through the hole.

Have you tried increasing the XY compensation? That seems to work the best, as it recovers some of the geometry lost during printing. Try increasing it in small steps (like 0.05 mm) until you find a number that gives you a robust articulation πŸ˜‰

I am exactly with you on the different expansion properties of the filaments. When I print it just black, perfect articulation. When it is printed in multi-color, grey and black, the black parts pop off :/

I have tried the expansion, but I run into perimiter fusions quickly :')

I think I'll just remodel the articlated bits in blender :P

Well, remodeling the articulations in not easy, because the tolerances are tiny. But it may be worth the time if we discover the issue. If I prepare some test files, would you be interested on beta-testing them? All my tests work for me, probably because of the brands I use. So I can't properly validate new geometries. One thing to note is, I do print them at 65% scale, and that must definitely be taken into consideration ':)

I have tried to print this several times but during the print the pieces keep shifting and will not stay in place. Can you tell me how to get the piece to stay in place while printing?

What's the smallest successful scale size for a mini raccoon? I tried 50% scale and it didn't quite work so I'm wondering if there's a specific scale down you suggest

That question doesn't have a simple answer. It depends a lot on the printer, nozzle size, slicer settings, and I've even seen differences with different filaments. Using a 0.4 mm nozzle and default 0.16 layer settings, I've printed a few at 60%. I haven't tried smaller than that, but I know some people have.

Hi! I'm sorry to hear that. I've identified several settings that might be causing this issue:
- Be sure you are using 0.4 mm nozzle or smaller.
- On the quality settings, select the arachne perimeter generator.
- Use a layer height of 0.2 mm or thinner

Hi, i slice 5 raccoon but purge filament is around 346g and object only 155g. Have you got a solution to reduce purge ?

Hi! I usually set a 0.7 multiplier for the flushing volume, and set the "purge to infill" option for all the models. That makes a difference, but still far from perfect

It can be printed even hollow, so the infill only depends on how strong you want it to be πŸ˜‰

maybe I'm asking a dumb question... but can I print this just as one color? When I the design to Prusa Slicer, it gives me options for 4 different extruders. I tried to print earlier, and it had stopped, filament wouldn't come out and I had a big c my tubing. I wanted to try again, but don't want to go through that mess again. Any tips or what settings I should be looking at?

Hi! Once you open it with PrusaSlicer be sure to select your printer profile. If you don't have a multicolor printer it should show just one extruder. To make things easier, load the file "Racoon_v3.stl" instead of the 3MF. It has no color information so it should slice just as a single color object.

Hi! I've heard about something similar before, and after inspecting the gcode I found out that the slicer (Cura) was shrinking the geometry. Not sure why it did that, but it caused the articulations to be too loose and fall apart. I suggested them to check the XY compensation setting, but I didn't heard back from them (I guess it worked?). Either that, or move to another slicer. I recommend PrusaSlicer or OrcaSlicer.

Anyway, if it keeps happening please send me the gcode and some pictures of the failed piece to [email protected] and I'll be glad to investigate it πŸ˜‰
